Add CPU or RAM to a VM while it is powered on

It is possible to add CPU and memory to a virtual machine while it is powered on.  This is not enabled by default but if you edit the settings of a VM you can enable Memory Hot Add and CPU Hot Plug.

Note: Before enabling these options ensure that:

  1. The VM is powered off
  2. The guest operating system supports CPU and memory hot add functionality
  3. VMware Tools is installed on the guest operating system
  4. The VM is using hardware version 7 or later
