Veeam backup – VDDK error 13 (You do not have access rights to this file)

I have created a new backup job in Veeam Backup & Replication but it keeps failing to backup a particular VM with this error:

Error: VDDK error: 13 (You do not have access rights to this file). Value: 0x000000000000000d Failed to read from a virtual disk Failed to upload disk. Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}.

I haven’t seen this message before and couldn’t find much help via Google.  One of my first troubleshooting steps was to try migrating the VM to a different host and retry the backup.  Unfortunately the migration failed with this message:

Error caused by file /vmfs/volumes/583f4858-59eb6f00-d-490-0015178c6684/WW-SQL/WW-SQL_1.vmdk

Again, I couldn’t find much help on this so I can only assume that the .VMDK file had become corrupt. I ended up adding a new virtual disk, copying the data and then deleting the old virtual disk.  Now the Veeam job succeeds and I can migrate the VM between hosts.
